Constructed Wetland for Diffuse Pollution

Project Info

Project Description

Thistleyhaugh Farm lies within the River Coquet floodplain, upstream of Weldon Bridge. The river is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The farm enterprise is comprised of beef cattle, breeding sheep, finishing pigs and poultry. The Northumberland Rivers Trust was approached to develop a project that would ensure any dirty leaking from the farmyard was treated before reaching the river.

A large silt trap with reed-bed system was excavated in November 2012. The total cost of the project was £5,000 and was partly funded through EU Water Framework Directive grant aid. Within two weeks the silt trap was full of water. Below the series of photos show how the site has matured from excavation to the present day.
